“I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become.”

About Us

Northside Psychology Services is the collective practice of Dr. Hannah Carl and Dr. Katie McGowan. We are both licensed clinical psychologists and licensed school psychologists. At Northside Psychology, we recognize the myriad ways mental health has affected individuals, families, and larger systems, and our mission is to bring our expertise to the relationships with our clients in order to improve outcomes across environments. If you are looking for professionals to help you navigate challenges related to social and emotional health, we would be honored to help you on your journey. We are looking for clients who are ready to do the courageous work of building relationships, improving their lives, and growing emotionally and spiritually. Perhaps you are looking for us, too.

Please check out our individual bios for more information about our unique backgrounds and modalities. You can reach out to either one of us to schedule a free initial 15-minute intake call to see if we may be a good fit for therapy or consultation. We are so excited to hear from you.

“You are the sky. Everything else — it’s just the weather.”

Hannah Carl, PsyD, NCSP

Dr. Hannah Carl (she/her) works with her patients to create a therapeutic environment that prioritizes connection, curiosity, and play. She is known for her warmth, humor, and radical genuineness. Hannah has experience working with individuals with both internalizing and externalizing behaviors, including disordered eating and body image issues, self-harm and suicidal behaviors, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and personality disorders. She also has a special interest in working with individuals and families whose lives have been touched by addiction, especially family members and friends of those with substance abuse disorders. Hannah is passionate about helping individuals identify and remove barriers to connection and community, and she has found that taking a directive and empathic approach results in profound change for her patients, who in turn develop self-respect and dramatically improve their relationships. She works with her patients to balance acceptance and change and become open and willing to do the courageous work necessary to grow.

Hannah is a licensed clinical psychologist and nationally certified school psychologist. She sees patients in person in Chicago, and she is licensed through PSYPACT to provide telehealth services across state lines. She completed her doctoral degree in School Psychology at The Chicago School and has worked in psychiatric hospital settings, partial hospitalization programs, therapeutic schools, transition schools, and private practice. Hannah works with individuals across the lifespan, with a special focus on emerging adults. She has specialized training in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and exposure and response prevention (ERP). She approaches therapy with a blend of each, depending on her patient’s needs, with a focus on living a valued life, prioritizing integrity, increasing psychological flexibility, and improving relationships.

Hannah also works to role model healthy behaviors for her clients, and she spends time outside of the office (and as much as she can in the office) moving toward her values of community, environmental justice, adventure, creativity, and play. She enjoys spending time chasing adventures with her husband, reading at home with her cats, and playing games with loved ones. She is a dancer (modern and lindy hop), singer, wanderlust enthusiast, amateur gardener, tag-along backpacker, fair weather cyclist, abashedly devoted pickleball player, and city homesteader (she will make you a loaf of sourdough if you ask). She absolutely wants to talk to you about your pets, your existential dread, and your niche hobbies.

Katie McGowan, PsyD, NCSP

Dr. Katie McGowan (she/her) places great importance on creating a safe, warm, and collaborative therapeutic environment for the individuals she serves. She strives to build a supportive and honest relationship with clients while maintaining patience, compassion, and humor. Katie understands that therapeutic change comes from focusing on an individual’s needs while processing the impact of various ecological systems. She values working with both the client and their family to create goals, monitor progress, and champion their successes. Katie understands how feeling connected to others can empower individuals to take on life’s inevitable challenges. She aims to build a strong relationship with clients to increase self concept and foster healing and growth. Katie maintains a strength-based and resilience-focused lens while also utilizing interventions from CBT, DBT, ACT, and play therapy to meet the needs of the client.

Katie graduated with her Psy.D. in school psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and also a nationally certified School Psychologist (NCSP). Katie has trained in a variety of settings including public, selective enrollment, and private schools, hospital outpatient, residential treatment programs, group practice, and clinical research. She has also taught as an adjunct professor for The Chicago School of Professional Psychology’s undergraduate psychology program. Katie’s training has included working with children, adolescents, young adults, parents, and family systems experiencing a variety of emotional and behavioral concerns. Katie’s experience has included helping those demonstrating symptoms associated with ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, intellectual disability, giftedness, grief, trauma, school refusal, and self-esteem issues. She works closely with parents to identify and change behavioral management strategies to improve parent-child relationships. Katie is also certified in Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT).

Outside of work, Katie enjoys spending her time outdoors hiking, biking, playing sports, and taking her dog Ziggy to any patio that is dog friendly. On the weekends, Katie loves attending concerts, sporting events, comedy shows, and trying out different farmer’s markets and restaurants with friends. She appreciates learning about different cultures through traveling both outside of and around the country, and is always looking for a new book or documentary recommendation.

At Northside Psychology Services, we aim to foster an inclusive environment for individuals from all walks of life. This includes BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual +). We stand in solidarity with individuals who are a part of these communities and will continue to actively fight against historical systemic oppression, racism, and prejudice. We will do this by upholding our ethical principles of maintaining dignity and respect, increasing our awareness of our own biases, and continuing to educate ourselves on issues relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As mental health clinicians, we will continue to better ourselves every day so that we can provide the highest level of care and ensure our clients feel supported, appreciated, and empowered.
